The Netherlands launched national population alert system

On November 8th 2012 the Ministry of Security and Justice of the Netherlands launched NL-Alert, their national population alert system, developed by UMS.

NL-Alert is a population alert system based on the Cell Broadcast technology. UMS has been responsible for tailoring its own well established user interface to fit with the needs from the Dutch authority as well as making the interfaces between the system used by the authorities and the mobile operators; KPN, Vodafone and T-Mobile.

To fulfil the contract UMS has worked in close cooperation with its Dutch partner Centric Software Engineering,
NL-Alert is a new supplementary alarm method for mobile phones and fits well together with the existing siren system. With NL-Alert, the government can warn and inform people in the immediate vicinity of an emergency with a text message. Thus, more people can be reached and people are better and more relevantly informed when a crisis occurs wherever they are.
