HSY (Helsinki Region Environmental Authority Services) is Finland’s largest water and drainage organisation, serving more than one million residents throughout the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
At the beginning of October, HSY started to use an SMS-system to notify residents of planned service disruptions. These planned disruptions are mainly related to construction and maintenance work on the water grid.

The Service Alert System is a mass notification solution that enables both public and private utility organisations to send service notifications via text message, voice mail, e-mail and social media. Residents and companies can be selected based on their registered address to be alerted. Examples of areas in which service notifications are used are not limited to, but include:
- emergency repairs of water pipes
- planned repairs of water pipes
In modern society, SMS is the preferred notification channel because of its clear and concise messaging. UMS uses direct connections to mobile network operators to ensure messages are quickly delivered to intended recipients.
